What is that

  • Tooth is made from 3 layers , the outer layer ( the enamel ) is made from minerals , Fluoride is a mineral that also occurs naturally in many foods and water.
  • Everyday many minerals are lost & gained from the enamel through two processes, demineralization & remineralization,
  •  Demineralization happens when acids from plaque bacteria & sugars attack the enamel layer and Remineralization happens when minerals such as fluoride, calcium, and phosphate are redeposited to the enamel layer from the foods and waters consumed .
  • The process of losing minerals is called Demineralization , gaining them back is called Remineralization .
  • Too much demineralization without enough remineralization to repair the enamel layer leads to tooth decay.

What is its importance to teeth..?

  • If your child has had cavities or is at high risk of tooth decay, he should use extra fluoride. This will promote remineralization.
  • Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth.
  • In children under 6 years of age, fluoride becomes incorporated into the development of permanent teeth, making it difficult for acids to demineralize the teeth.
  • Fluoride also helps speed remineralization as well as disrupts acid production in already erupted teeth of both children and adults.

When Is Fluoride Intake Most Critical?

It is certainly important for infants and children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years to be exposed to fluoride. This is the timeframe during which the primary and permanent teeth come in.

How is it applied ..??

  • People can apply fluoride directly to their teeth by using a fluoride toothpaste or rinse, they can also receive fluoride treatments from the dentist.
  • This can be applied for both children and adults also.
  • There are 2 types :
  • Topical fluoride products applied directly to the teeth, including toothpaste, mouth rinses , they  are in the mouth for only a short time.
  • Professionally applied fluoride treatments, that are given in dental office , including gel , foam or varnish.
  • Fluoride mouth rinses are recommended for children over the age of 6.
  • Your dentist can prescribe fluoride rinses and gels if your child needs a higher level of fluoride
  • Fluoride supplements are also available as liquids and tablets and must be prescribed by your dentist, pediatrician, or family doctor.

Are There Risks Associated With Fluoride Use?

  • Excess fluoride can cause defects in the enamel layer of the tooth, these defects are known as fluorosis and occur when the teeth are forming -- usually in children younger than 6 years.
  • Fluoride is safe and effective when used as directed but can be hazardous at high doses (the "toxic" dosage level varies based on an individual's weight).
  • That’s why it's important for parents to carefully supervise their children's use of fluoride-containing products and to keep fluoride products out of reach of children, especially children under the age of 6.
